Lyon County

The Lyon County website lists specific guidelines as to what materials are or are not recyclable in your area; please consult this list (as well as any materials you may have received from your county or recycling servicer) as you collect your recyclables. But remember, you can always recycle MORE than just what's collected! Reusable goods can be given to thrift stores or churches, food waste can be composted, some materials can be sent directly to remanufacturers... For tips on recycling MORE than what's normally collected, check out our mega list of what can be recycled and how.

Recycling Guidelines

The Lyon County "single stream" recycling program allows for all recyclable material to be combined into one collection container. This "co-mingled" material is sorted at special recycling centers. Though sorting of recyclables is not longer needed, it is still important to ONLY place recyclable material in the recycling containers so that all material can be efficiently sorted, and that handlers of this material are safe.

Materials do not need to be separated. However, please prepare the items as follows:
-- Rinse and clean non-paper containers.
-- Remove & discard caps or covers from plastic and glass containers. (You DO NOT need to remove labels.)
-- Flatten cardboard products and plastic jugs.

The following materials are accepted:

MIXED PAPER
Newspapers and inserts, magazines, catalogs, phone books, junk mail, envelopes, office paper, computer/copy paper and writing paper. DO NOT INCLUDE: wet, greasy or dirty paper; paper clips; rubber bands; metal or plastic clips/bindings; carbon paper; food wrappers.

CARDBOARD & BOXBOARD
Corrugated cardboard, boxboard (boxes from cake mix, cereals, macaroni, crackers, tissues) and brown paper bags. DO NOT INCLUDE: wet, greasy or dirty paper or cardboard.

GLASS
Unbroken food/beverage bottles and jars (rinse and remove lids) are accepted. DO NOT INCLUDE: drinking glasses; dishes; ceramics; window glass; mirrors; light bulbs; perfume bottles; white or frosted bottles.

CANS
Aluminum, tin and steel cans are accepted. Empty and rinse. DO NOT INCLUDE: paint or aerosol cans; screw-on lids; aluminum foil.

PLASTIC
Plastic food/beverage bottles and jugs marked with recycling symbols #1, #2, #3, #5 or #7 are accepted. Rinse and remove lids. DO NOT INCLUDE: plastic bags; styrofoam; pipe/hose; toys; plastic containers without an acceptable recycling symbol.
